The chief of police shall, at least once a year and as often as is deemed advisable, cause to be sold at public auction to the highest bidder for each, all property which shall come into the possession of the police department by being taken from persons arrested for crime or property which may be found and remains unclaimed by any person or persons entitled thereto for a period of not less than six months after the same has come into the possession of the police department.
